Today, we’re excited to announce major updates on the Scaleway platform.
Over the last few months, we've consistently run out of stock on almost all Scaleway server types. This is, of course, a problem. We apologise for any issues this may have caused and are currently working on a solution to the surge in demand on our products.
Our new generation of servers are in the process of being deployed in both Paris and Amsterdam, so keep your eyes peeled for an official announcement!

Local Boot and Custom Kernels
One of our most anticipated features is finally live! You can now boot using your own kernel located on your local volume.
Since Scaleway's launch, we've used what we call bootscripts which basically means the Kernel, Initrd and Kernel commandline used to boot the server. Bootscripts are mandatory for BareMetal servers since the Kernel is not readable from the local volume during the boot phase. When we released our first generation of Virtual Cloud Servers, we decided to keep the same behaviour. While Kernel source code is available on GitHub, which allows you to build your own modules, this isn't convenient across all use-cases.
Currently on all Virtual Cloud Servers the local boot is the default option, Kernels and Initrd are installed directly on the volume which allows you to use the distribution kernel or any customized kernel of your choice.
Bootscripts are still available and useful to boot your server in rescue mode to debug your server.
We're still in the process of rebuilding the arm64 Images, and the ARM64 Cloud Servers will be getting a local boot option in the coming days.
To switch to local boot, you will need to re-create your server with one of our new local boot compatible images. All newly created x86 Cloud Servers will use a local kernel by default.
BareMetal Cloud Servers are not compatible and existing virtual cloud servers can't be switched to local boot as the partition table is not compatible.
Over the last few months, we totally reworked the way we build and manage distributions and InstantApps to improve and simplify the delivery pipeline.
The new ImageHub allows us to provide up-to-date distributions and InstantApps faster.
All listed images and InstantApps are now up-to-date.
Security Groups live reload
In the past, security group modifications on virtual cloud servers were not automatically applied. Instead, a hard reboot using the API or from the console was needed.
We've improved the process and you can now apply new security rules without downtime. Each modification is applied automatically on your server.
At Scaleway, the security of your data and your trust is paramount.
A few weeks ago, we improved our security notification system to avoid intrusions and alert you in the case of any unusual activity on your account.
We take security very seriously. In order to improve the security of your account, we highly encourage you to enable Two-factor authentication and never use the same password for multiple services.
Scaleway Packer builder
The Scaleway Packer builder is now live and allows you to easily build automated machine images.
Packer, is a command-line tool for creating identical machine images for multiple platforms and environments. Which allows you to use automated scripts to install and configure the software within your Packer-made images and seamlessly use it with Scaleway servers.
